Ep 26 – Bad Guy with a Heart

11-25-18This week, even though it is after Thanksgiving, we will spend some time on Thanksgiving entertainment.

First, John was able to watch Peppermint, and listen as he explains that he is finally coming around to liking Jennifer Garner.

Next, Dhani talks about the movie The Children Act.  This doesn’t take long because she was quite disappointed in the film.  She still loves Emma Thompson, but the movie did not rise to meet her talent.

Then we move on the Netflix movie The Christmas Chronicles starring Kurt Russell as Santa Claus.  Dhani really enjoyed this new take on the story of Santa and teaching kids to believe.

Then John and Dhani finally finished the latest season of the Great British Bake Off and they gush over this amazing season and the bakers on the show.

Last week Dhani forgot to list her favorite Thanksgiving movies, so she lists these even though the holiday is over.  I think they work for the entire holiday season, so perhaps people can still enjoy them for the next few weeks anyway.

And finally, instead of an Actors’ Corner this week, we are ranking our Top 5 Friends Thanksgiving episodes and comparing our choices to the podcast Pop Culture Nickel.  Dhani is a super fan of Friends, so forgive her for perhaps going on a bit about her love of the show… but it is an interesting discussion.

Peppermint (2:06)

The Children Act (8:10)

The Christmas Chronicles (11:12)

The Great British Bake Off (17:21)

Thanksgiving Movies (23:46)

Top 5 Friends Thanksgiving Episodes (29:50)

Ep 25 – Opposite Ends of the Spectrum

11-18-18For a change this week, Dhani doesn’t have any movies to talk about… so we focus on a few TV shows and then the Actors’ Corner.

First, Dhani talks about the Showtime show called Kidding with Jim Carrey.  Then she discusses the latest season of American Horror Story: Apocalypse.  Next, Dhani watched the new Netflix show The Kominsky Method starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin.  Next, it’s tough for Dhani to go without talking about her favorite show Blackish and since they hit their 100th episode, plus it was a tribute to Prince, she had to mention it!

Next, we get to the Actors’ Corner with Jim Carrey.  We discuss the works of Jim Carrey’s that we love, like, hate, secretly love, haven’t seen and want to see.

Finally, we reiterate that we are working next week with the podcast Pop Culture Nickel to rank the Top 5 Friends Thanksgiving episodes.  Listen to their podcast the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to hear their Top 5, and then the Sunday after Thanksgiving, John and Dhani will compare their Top 5 to Marc and Jeannette’s of Pop Culture Nickel.

Kidding (5:35)

AHS: Apocalypse (10:03)

The Kominsky Method (14:10)

Pop Culture Nickel (41:10)

Ep 24 – Long Week

11-11-18This week was a very long week in real life… and it appears that this spilled over into the things that Dhani watched as well.  This episode might seem too political for some listeners, but Dhani really feels that people can learn from TV and Movies, so please listen and make your decision about watching these things.

First, Dhani saw The Hate U Give.  This is a harrowing story about a cop shooting a young, unarmed, black teen.  While we have seen this story in real life way too many times, the movie talks about very important pieces to such a complicated situation.  This is a movie that every person, and especially all young people should watch.

Next, Dhani watched the Netflix special, John Leguizamo’s Lating History for Morons.  She learned so much about the Latino history that has been wiped from our textbooks or culture.  This is a very informative, but very funny show that everyone can enjoy.  John Leguizamo is a fantastic teacher and storyteller.

Switching now to TV, Dhani touches on The Purge that just ended.  She enjoyed the 10 episodes enough to recommend to those that enjoy the movies.  Next, she talks about Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and the overall arch of the 4 seasons and how much she is going to miss this original, funny, musical show.

Finally, we get to our Actors’ Corner and this week we chose Melissa McCarthy.  She is receiving the ICON award at the Peoples’ Choice Awards this weekend, so we thought we would honor her work as well.  Listen as John and Dhani name Melissa’s projects that they love, like, hate, secretly love, haven’t seen and want to see.

The Hate U Give (1:00)  ★★★★★

John Leguizamo’s Latin History For Morons (13:30)

The Purge (25:02)

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (29:45)

Actors’ Corner: Melissa McCarthy (35:44)

Ep 23 – It Grasped Me

11-4-18This week starts off with allergies and strange words… but I think we get it together long enough to discuss a few things that were watched this week.

First, Dhani talks about watching the movie The Darkest Minds.  She liked the performances, but the story still lacked a bit of explanation.  Next, Dhani talks about the documentary Three Identical Strangers and the horrific twist that these siblings discover about their lives and adoption story.  It’s quite fascinating and everyone should check out this movie.

Next, before moving on to TV, we talk about an exciting cross-promotion we are doing with another podcast called Pop Culture Nickel.  Dhani gave them 5 thanksgiving epsiodes of Friends for them to rank on their podcast before Thanksgiving and then we will compare their rankings to our own.  Listen to their promo and check them out!

Moving on to TV, Dhani first discusses binging the new series Homecoming on Amazon Prime with Julia Roberts.  She loved the direction by Sam Esmail more than the story… but it all truly worked well together and she was intrigued by the series as a whole.

Then we talk about the new late night show called Busy Tonight hosted by Busy Philipps.  Both John and Dhani have really enjoyed the first week’s episodes and find it to be very fresh and new.

Finally, Dhani surmises about the depressing show A Million Little Things.  She doesn’t think she can take one more sad thing happening on this show.  They are trying too hard and she can’t even find the sympathy for the characters anymore!

And then we get into the Actor’s Corner and this week we chose Julia Roberts.   We share the projects of hers that we love, like, hate, haven’t seen and want to see.

The Darkest Minds (1:21) ★★★

Three Identical Strangers (8:15) ★★★★

PROMO: Pop Culture Nickel (18:00)

Homecoming (22:05)

Busy Tonight (32:08)

A Million Little Things (39:13)
